Melatonin – a reliable assistant during pregnancy – Kleemed Ukraine
Want to successfully conceive, bear and give birth to a healthy and strong baby – start to get enough sleep!
During sleep, our body produces a very important hormone – melatonin. Earlier it was claimed that its synthesis occurs in the epiphysis, located in the brain. However, today it is precisely known that melatonin can be produced in the retina of the eyes, skin, thyroid gland and even in the gastrointestinal tract. The concentration of melatonin in the blood is unstable and varies with the time of day and season. So the hormone level reaches a peak at two o'clock in the morning, and by morning its content in the blood drops to its minimum values. Moreover, the melatonin content increases by the end of autumn and in winter, when the nights get longer.
Traditionally it was believed that the main function of melatonin is the regulation of daily rhythms, which obey the work of all internal organs and systems. But recent studies have shown that the possibilities of the sleep hormone are much wider and more diverse. Melatonin not only makes it easier to fall asleep, it slows down the aging process and protects the body from cancer and other serious diseases. It also plays an important role in the treatment of female infertility, prevents the development of various complications during pregnancy and childbirth. Interestingly, female sexual activity and fertility, that is, the ability to conceive and give birth to a child, is subject to daily and seasonal fluctuations in the level of the hormone in the blood.
As you know, one of the causes of infertility is a decrease in the quantity and quality of eggs due to the destructive effect of oxidative stress on them. Being a powerful antioxidant, melatonin blocks the “aggressor” – reactive oxygen species (ROS), protecting the germ cells and the genetic material contained in them. It turns out that by going to bed on time or by taking an analogue of natural melatonin in the form of, for example, a dietary supplement to the basic diet, a woman increases her chances of successful conception. Also, scientific research has confirmed the positive effect of melatonin on the egg cells in preparation for in vitro fertilization (IVF) and improving the viability of sperm in men.
Melatonin plays a special role in the process of follicle maturation and ovulation. It helps to increase the concentration of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and other hormones that are necessary for a mature egg to leave the follicle and enter the fallopian tube, where it could meet with the sperm cell.
Thanks to the immunomodulatory effect and its influence on the cell division process, melatonin creates favorable conditions for the subsequent attachment of the fertilized egg to the uterine mucosa – endometrium. It is known that melatonin modulates the synthesis of progesterone, necessary for the preservation of pregnancy.
Without melatonin, it is impossible to fully develop the internal organs of the fetus, its brain and immune system. Penetrating through the placenta, the maternal hormone triggers the “internal clock” of the organism that originates under the heart. Due to this, the daily rhythms of the mother and her future baby are synchronized, information about the length of the day and night is transmitted.
If a woman in an interesting position does not sleep well or sleeps little at night, melatonin is formed in smaller quantities than is necessary. And this is immediately reflected in all organs and systems, both her own and the future baby. Studies have shown that even a small melatonin deficiency can lead to hormonal imbalance, disruption of the state of the placenta, fetal activity and heartbeat. Stress and depression, pregnancy complications such as miscarriage, pre-eclampsia, eclampsia, fetal hypoxia, and premature labor are associated with a lack of sleep hormone. That is why it is very important that the future mother's body receives a sufficient amount of melatonin, especially in the third trimester. It is no coincidence that some doctors advise planning conception in late spring so that the last period of pregnancy falls in late autumn and winter, when melatonin secretion is at its maximum.
As you can see, melatonin is vital for the birth of a healthy baby. Unfortunately, with age, the level of production of this hormone is significantly reduced. Melatonin synthesis can be disrupted by chronic sleep deprivation, non-compliance with the rules of healthy sleep, or traveling from one time zone to another.
Maintaining melatonin levels is not so difficult. First of all, you need to get enough sleep. In this case, not only the duration of sleep is important, but also its quality. The peak of melatonin production falls on the night hours – from 23:00 to 5:00, which means that at this time everyone who wants healthy offspring should be in the arms of Morpheus.
In addition to observing sleep patterns, it is important to protect oneself from stress and to get more positive emotions. So you will increase the synthesis in the body of the “hormone of happiness” – serotonin, which is the biological precursor of melatonin. It is equally important to ensure the intake of tryptophan – an amino acid necessary for the production of serotonin. An easy way to do this is to consume a sufficient amount of protein foods: red meat, dairy products, nuts, seeds, soy and other foods. Try to arrange a bed in such a way as to sleep in complete darkness. The light of a street lamp, penetrating into an apartment, or a luminous electronic clock, suppress melatonin synthesis.
You can compensate for the lack of sleep hormone from the outside by taking its counterpart. More recently, a unique development by Italian scientists has appeared on the Ukrainian market – a dietary supplement to the therapeutic diet, Notty. It has a pronounced sedative and hypnotic effect, helps you fall asleep faster and less often wake up at night. In addition, the additive effectively eliminates the symptoms of overvoltage: anxiety, irritability, fatigue, tachycardia and migraine.
The indisputable advantage of Notty over other drugs for insomnia in the Ukrainian market is melatonin content. Due to the hormone that is irreplaceable and natural for us, it has a mild effect on the body. As a result, the process of falling asleep is accelerated, the number of nighttime awakenings decreases, sleep becomes deep and calm.
The action of Notty is not limited to the hypnotic effect. Since melatonin is one of the strongest antioxidants, regular supplementation helps to slow down the aging process, “spur” the immune defense against various infections. Melatonin prevents the increase in blood pressure and other cardiovascular diseases, which is especially important for a favorable course of pregnancy and proper development of the baby.
It has been observed that women with normal levels of melatonin feel much better and less likely to experience stress.
In addition to melatonin, Notty includes the patented complex of phytocomponents SedaxTM, which includes extracts of well-known relaxing and soothing plants: valerian, escholcium, hawthorn, passionflower and mellis.
Valerian effectively fights overwork, nervousness and various sleep disorders. What you need for relaxation and good rest.
Extract of eshsholtsy also has a sedative effect, helps to speed up sleep, reduce the frequency and duration of awakenings during sleep.
Hawthorn thanks to the beneficial effects on the blood vessels normalizes blood pressure and heart rate. In addition, it helps to relax, relieve muscle and nervous tension.
Passionflower is another natural remedy for insomnia and stress. It does not cause headaches, nervousness, addiction and other side effects with which potent drugs.
Melissa is the traditional lifeguard for problems with falling asleep, depression, migraine, hypertension and tachycardia. In addition, effectively copes with "gastric" neurosis. Surely, you are familiar with the situation when, due to strong experiences, appetite disappears, stomach pains and digestive disorders appear. And lemon balm helps to eliminate all this.
Notty contains another effective antidepressant, vitamin B6. Through participation in the synthesis of serotonin, it helps to cope with fatigue, irritability and emotional over-stimulation.
As you can see, Notty will become an indispensable tool when planning a baby and during pregnancy. It is also useful for young mothers who, due to circumstances, do not sleep at night, devote a lot of time to home and family. With Notty, mother and baby will be healthy, full of energy and happy!
